Reasons Why Your Dishwasher May Be Leaving Your Dishes Dirty

A dishwasher is a modern kitchen essential that is put in place to save time and effort while making sure that your dishes are left clean and spotless. However, it is very frustrating when your dishwasher falls short of this basic expectation, leaving your glasses, plates, and cutlery still dirty. There are a number of reasons why this may happen, and understanding these common reasons can help you troubleshoot the problem and restore your dishwasher performance, ensuring that dishes can come out sparkly clean.

Not Scraping or Pre-Rinsing Dishes

One conventional reason why your dishwasher may not be cleaning your dishes is due to the fact you may not be scraping or pre-rinsing your plates/glasses before loading. Although modern dishwashers are designed to handle a certain amount of food residue, large chunks or stubborn food particles can clog the filters, block the water spray, and overall reduce how effectively the dishwasher is working. By taking a few minutes to scrape off the food or rinse the dish under the tap, you can prevent items in your dishwasher from coming out dirty, and ensure a more thorough clean.

Loading Your Dishwasher Incorrectly

Loading your dishwasher is another common cause of dirty dishes after being through a cycle. When dishes are not arranged properly in your dishwasher, water and the washing-up tablet may not be able to reach all surfaces, leaving food chunks and soap residue behind. Similarly, overloading the dishwasher, blocking the spray arms, or placing the items too close together can block the water flow and not allow the dishes to be cleaned as effectively. To make sure that your dishwasher is properly cleaning your dishes, ensure that your dishes are spaced out evenly, larger items don't block the spray arms, and delicate items like glasses are placed on the top rack where the water pressure is more gentle. Ensuring that you load your dishwasher in the correct way allows your dishwasher to clean your dishes more effectively, leaving them sparkling clean.

Using The Wrong Dishwasher Tablet

Using the wrong washing tablet can massively impact the way that your dishwasher performs its washing cycle, often resulting in dishes coming out dirty, or still covered in residue. Not all dishwashing tablets are created equally, and therefore, using a tablet that is not compatible with your machine or water type can leave your dishes dirty. For example, hard water may require a dishwasher tablet that contains additional water softeners while some others work better with specific types of tablets, such as those that require rinse aid. Choosing the right washing tablet for your dishwasher and water conditions is important for achieving the best possible results.

Issues With The Dishwasher Temperature

Dishwasher temperature issues can be a common reason why your dishes may come out unclean or greasy. For best practice, the water temperature inside your dishwasher must be hot enough, usually between 49 - 66 degrees Celsius to effectively dissolve the tablet and break down food particles. If the water is not reaching the necessary temperature, your dishwasher may struggle to remove grime, grease, and bacteria from your dishes. This could potentially be due to a malfunctioning heating element, incorrect settings or your home water heater may not be set high enough.
